Following in the footsteps of her mother and sister, Lauren Coshun ’25 chose to attend Carthage. She liked that the College was close to home but still far enough away to give her the independence she wanted. She appreciates that Carthage let her continue playing volleyball, and she credits her professors for helping her discover her passion for public relations.

Lauren also enjoys the Kenosha environment, frequently spending time out on the town with friends or relaxing by the lake. “My favorite part of living in Kenosha is definitely the beach,” says Lauren, “but also all the amazing local food spots like Yee’s Oriental Inn and Villa D’ Carlo — there are so many great options!”

Why Carthage?

“I chose Carthage because it offered the perfect balance of being close to home while still giving me the independence I wanted. With my mom and sister both attending Carthage, it felt familiar and supportive. I liked that I could return home for weekly visits and laundry, but I still had the space to focus on my personal growth. I also wanted to continue my volleyball career, which I played for two years before shifting my focus to my professional aspirations and career path.”

Faculty mentors

Professor Colleen Palmer has greatly impacted me during my time at Carthage. When I first started, I was unsure about what to study. I was placed in her Public Speaking class and quickly realized how much I loved it. Prof. Palmer encouraged me to pursue public relations. Her hands-on classes teach real-world skills. She also helped me find internships that have taught me much and guided me on my career path.”

Favorite class

“My favorite class during my time at Carthage has been Public Relations Campaigns. We got to work on a real-life project, creating a campaign for Zion, Illinois. Everyone in the class was passionate about public relations and truly wanted to help the city grow, which made the experience even more meaningful.”

Internships or campus employment

“My internship at Rustic Road Brewing Company has been an amazing experience, giving me many opportunities and teaching me much about social media. I’ve learned that a successful career in public relations depends on having good connections, and this experience has shown me how important it is to build strong relationships in the field.”

Career goal

“My career goal is to build a rewarding career in public relations where I find joy and satisfaction in my work environment. I aim to thrive in a role that aligns with my passions and allows me to make a positive impact and grow professionally.”

Advice for other students in your major?

“The field of public relations is growing, with paychecks getting more appealing, but beyond that, if you’re passionate about social media, managing crises, and helping companies succeed in fresh, innovative ways, this career path is perfect for you. One piece of advice: being passionate about your major doesn’t make you a nerd; study hard.”
